Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer.
All thermal label printers use heat to create an image — the difference is whether they use a ribbon. The right method depends on how long your label needs to last and what conditions it will face.
Direct Thermal
The print head applies heat directly to a heat-sensitive paper label. No ribbon required — simple, fast and low-cost, but the image fades over time when exposed to heat, UV or moisture.

Thermal Transfer
The print head melts ink from a ribbon onto the label surface. The ribbon type (wax, wax-resin or resin) sets the durability. Works on paper and synthetic labels — producing long-lasting, high-quality prints.

Thermal Ribbons

Wax Ribbons
The most economical option — ideal for paper labels and general-purpose printing where the label has a short to medium life. Clean, crisp barcodes and text at the lowest running cost.
Wax-Resin Ribbons
A balanced choice offering greater smudge and scratch resistance on coated paper and some synthetic labels. The middle ground when a wax ribbon isn't quite tough enough.
